In 1898, Julius Tishman, a Polish immigrant, used the profits from his upstate department store to build a six-storey tenement on Manhattan's Lower East Side. By 1928, Tishman Realty & Construction had gone public.
In the 1960s, while building Madison Square Garden, John L. Tishman developed and popularised construction management: one firm overseeing the planning, design and construction of a project to control time, cost and quality. It is now how much of the industry delivers its largest work.
Tishman went on to build the original World Trade Center and the John Hancock Center in Chicago, three of the world's earliest 100-storey towers, along with Epcot and Detroit's Renaissance Center.
After 9/11, it returned to the same site. It rebuilt 7 World Trade Center, the first tower to rise after the attacks, then served as construction manager for One, Three and Four World Trade Center and, in a joint venture with Turner, the Transportation Hub.
AECOM acquired Tishman Construction in 2010 for $245 million. More than 125 years on, the name is still on some of New York's most complex jobs.
For Those Who Build
Few firms have shaped the skyline of New York as much as AECOM Tishman.
